Imagine wanting to buy something that doesn't exist yet...
That's what happened to us when all we wanted was to buy a lavender aperitif in the South of France. No luck. Fine then — not straight from the farmer's field, but online. No luck again. Surely it can't be that there's no lavender liqueur anywhere in the world? Yes, it can. There wasn't.
We are great enthusiasts of the aperitif — the spritz in particular — and great lovers of Provence. Soap, home fragrance, the garden? Lavender everywhere. So we couldn't let it rest that there was no lavender drink.
And so we set out to bring Lav'a Belle to life. The drink of savoir-vivre that embodies Provence and the Côte d'Azur and brings them to life in your glass. Aperitif, lifestyle, statement.
There are so many ways to enjoy Lav'a Belle, with or without alcohol. The two classics are a spritz with sparkling wine — a little crisper and fresher — and the sour with lemon juice and a touch of sugar, a little smoother. Beyond that there are many more recipes: with tonic water, as a negroni, in a gin & tonic, even with mulled wine... we've put together a complete recipe collection for you here.
Lav'a Belle is first and foremost made from lavender blossoms and herbes de Provence of the finest quality from the South of France. Most people taste rosemary and thyme in particular, but more than 40 herbs are included in total. Add a touch of vanilla and, of course, sugar, water and alcohol — plus a tiny bit of food colouring, as the natural colour of lavender blossoms sadly fades after a short time.
The whole herbs are gently steeped in quadruple-distilled grain alcohol at room temperature, drawing out the aromas without any heating, unlike distillation. This preserves the plants' flavours and natural compounds as fully as possible.
The liqueur is then diluted with sugar and water to drinking strength.
Essentially it's the same product, except the alcohol is extracted again afterwards — so minimal traces may remain. Our latest lab analysis showed about 0.18%, roughly as much as a ripe banana. That said, we don't recommend it for pregnant women either.
For shelf life, we also use a different sweetener (sucralose) for the alcohol-free version.
